WHAT IS PROJECT ANGEL FOOD?

We are a nonprofit agency that cooks and delivers healthy, delicious meals and offers nutrition counseling—all free of charge—to people debilitated by serious illnesses. “Food is Medicine” is our philosophy, and our main goal is to help people become healthy again through proper nutrition. We provide people with the right foods so they can focus on healing and staying healthy

WHO DOES PROJECT ANGEL FOOD SERVE?

We serve men, women, and children throughout all of Los Angeles County who are debilitated by serious illnesses and cannot shop or cook for the food they need to survive and heal. They are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, congestive heart failure, COPD, diabetes, end-stage renal disease, HIV/AIDS, stroke-cardiovascular accident and/or other serious diseases. Many are struggling with two or more illnesses.

WHO IS PROJECT ANGEL FOOD?

Our corps of 4,700+ volunteers and generous donors who fund our work are at the heart of our mission. They enable client services, administration, nutrition and kitchen staff to provide life-saving meals to 2,400+ seriously ill people in need.

HOW MANY MEALS DOES PROJECT ANGEL FOOD COOK AND DELIVER?

We provide 21,000 meals each week and a total of about 95,000 meals monthly. We have cooked and delivered more than 14 million meals to date

WHO FUNDS PROJECT ANGEL FOOD?

ARE DONATIONS ELIGIBLE FOR A TAX DEDUCTION?

Yes. You may receive a tax deduction for your gift. ProjectAngel Food is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) agency.

WHAT AREAS DO YOU DELIVER TO?

Deliveries are made within Los Angeles County.

WHAT IS THE COST? HOW LONG DOES A CLIENT RECEIVE SERVICE?

If the application is approved, service is free of charge for one year.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE YEAR IS OVER?

Every year a new application is needed to determine eligibility for the next year.

DO I NEED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO APPLY?

No appointment necessary. The application can be printed from our website. If you do not have internet access, you can request for one to be mailed to you.

I HAVE COMPLETED THE APPLICATION. WHAT DO I NEED TO DONOW?

You can mail or fax the application to Project Angel Food to the address/fax number on the application.

I TURNED IN MY APPLICATION. WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

There is a process where the application is submitted for review to determine eligibility. You will be contacted once the review is completed

HOW IS PROJECT ANGEL FOOD FUNDED?

Project Angel Food is funded by grants and donations received each year.

WHAT IF I WANT TO PAY FOR SERVICES?

Project Angel Food is a non-profit community organization. We do not charge for our services.

WHAT IS MEDICAL NUTRITION THERAPY (MNT)?

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is used to determine the nutrition diagnosis, and develop nutrition interventions and counseling specific for the individual. It is an essential part of comprehensive healthcare that can aid individuals with a variety of illnesses and conditions improve their health.

WHY DO I HAVE TOCOMPLETE A NUTRITION ASSESSMENT?

Nutrition assessments are conducted by Registered Dietitians on staff to help figure out which meals are the best fit for you. We will ask you about your height, weight, medication, physical activity, appetite, food allergies, and how you are eating in general. We will also address any additional questions, and together develop ways to address your specific nutrition and health concerns.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEEDTO TALK TO THE DIETITIAN?

Based on the information discussed in the nutrition assessment, we may contact you as soon as three to four months, but typically most of our clients get a call back from the Dietitian in six to 12 months to reassess how they are doing and to address any additional concerns. WHEN AM I GETTING MY FOOD?

You need to complete the nutrition assessment before your first meals can be delivered. Once the nutrition assessment has been completed, it takes one to two weeks to get your first delivery.

HOW LONG CAN I STORE MY MEALS IN THE FREEZER?

You can store our frozen meals in the freezer for three to four months. Do not thaw and then re-freeze, as you can be putting yourself at risk for food borne illness.

HOW LONG SHOULD IWAIT TO EAT MY MEAL AFTER THAWING IT?

Meals can be thawed in the refrigerator up to 24 hours before reheating it. They can also be thawed in the microwave, but they must be fully cooked and eaten that same day. Meals should never be thawed in the sink, on the counter, or anywhere not refrigerated.

HOW SHOULD I REHEAT MY MEALS?

Directly from the freezer – It may take up to six to seven minutes to fully reheat the meal, depending on the power of your microwave. Be aware that side items like noodles or veggies may cook faster than the main entrée like chicken or lasagna.

After thawing– The meal should take three to four minutes to fully reheat, depending on the power of your microwave.
