On September 11, 2018, affordable housing developer Thomas Safran & Associates (TSA) dedicated their day of service, The Big Give, to Project Angel Food. (See photos here.) The day started out with heartfelt remarks by TSA President Jordan Pynes, who stated: “We want to remember those we lost on September 11, but our goal is to also do something positive for the community on this important day.” Part of the reason for this partnership is because 12 of TSA’s properties house Project Angel Food clients, he explained. TSA Chair Tom Safran and Project Angel Food Executive Director Richard Ayoub also shared remarks, followed by a special appearance by Project Angel Food client Tony, who shared with TSA his experience about being on our service.
And after the morning rally, 200 volunteers got right down to work. Not only did they prepare nutritious meals in the kitchen and decorate birthday bags for our clients—they also did some major building renovations. Projects included painting our second floor office space; upgrading our bathrooms; reorganizing storage closets and copy rooms; putting together new furniture; redesigning our volunteer lounge, second floor lobby, and employee lounge; and building an outdoor seating space.
In addition to these efforts, TSA presented Project Angel Food with a check for over $150,000! Part of this funding was thanks to TSA’s low-income residents, who have been involved in a month-long fundraising drive to raise money and in-kind donations like food and craft supplies. After the check presentation, the amazing Jill Black Zalben pledged to increase the donation amount to an even $175,000! As a result, we’ll be able to provide 35,000 more meals for our clients. Big thanks to KTLA for covering this remarkable event.
Inspired by Oprah Winfrey’s Reality Show, Oprah’s Big Give, TSA’s Big Give has been helping LA charities for over 10 years. We had an incredible day yesterday and feel truly blessed.
