Serving Our Veterans with Love and Respect: a Highlight on Ralph B.

Categories: Blogs

Imagine serving your country in one of the most devastating wars in American history, only to be shunned by the very people you risked life and limb for. Ralph B.’s eight years of honorable service as a munitions expert in Vietnam left him both physically exhausted and mentally depleted, but it was what ensued upon his return back home that nearly broke him.

As a proud American with an unwavering spirit, Ralph worked diligently to build his own business, purchase a home, and become a loyal husband. That all changed when he suffered a series of six heart attacks over a three-year period that left him unable to work. In the blink of an eye, he lost his business, his home, and sadly his wife of 50 years left him. Today, Ralph is living with congestive heart failure (CHF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), gout, and cardiomyopathy.

How would it feel to lose your health along with everything you love? You’ve spent so much of your life giving yourself to your family and your country, only to lose it all.

How scary must it be to lose it all and feel like you’re facing these challenges completely alone for the first time in 50 years? Now, imagine the relief you would feel to have a caring angel swoop in with delicious, nutritious meals and an abundant helping of love and camaraderie – this is what Project Angel Food does! It is a reminder that there are people in the world today you can count on, people who truly care about you.

Although Ralph struggles daily to catch his breath with even the smallest exertion, he remains eternally grateful. Project Angel Food “really saved my ass, they are my family now,” Ralph says. He can count on his driver Tim to arrive “like clockwork” with his food and a smile, allowing him to make it on time to his multiple doctors appointments. On a special restricted diet now, Ralph has grown to love the medically tailored meals he receives. He says the fresh fruit is delicious, especially the crisp pears he got in a recent package.

“The food is great. Now that I don’t have to think about my next meal, and I’m eating healthier, I’m getting better.”

Project Angel Food currently serves 39 veterans living with life-threatening illnesses throughout 4,400 square miles of Los Angeles County, and we are working diligently to increase those numbers. As the county’s only agency offering free, medically tailored meals, we know there are many more vets who need our services. Your support will help provide the vital resources needed to bring them on board and get them the medically tailored meals they need.

The ongoing support of caring and dedicated donors like you is what makes it possible for Project Angel Food to carry out its life-saving work—and we need your help now, more than ever. With today’s uncertainty in federal funding for veterans’ benefits, it is likely that elderly and/or disabled vets like Ralph would be hit the hardest. Currently, as much as 27% of veterans have reported struggling to put food on the table.

This is your chance to thank those brave men and women who have given up so much for our freedom and to make sure they have the nutrition they need. They were there for us, and now Project Angel Food must be there for them!

Will you make a donation today to ensure that no veteran ever has to go hungry? Your gift in any amount is deeply appreciated.

Ralph, thank you sir, for your service.
