 Project Angel Food Delivers Juneteenth Meals to Clients

 HOLLYWOOD, CA, June 19, 2020 – Project Angel Food is delivering its first-ever Juneteenth meal to our clients. The meal of turkey meatloaf, mashed potatoes, gravy, and green beans was designed by new client Mrs. Evelyn Johnson, board member Carol DeLilly, and is part of Project Angel Food’s ongoing efforts to prepare and deliver culturally sensitive meals. The meals will be delivered with a label commemorating Juneteenth; a visible reminder of the date in 1865 that Major General Gordon Granger and his Union soldiers finally arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended (two and a half years prior) and that President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation meant the enslaved were now free.

This date is especially meaningful to Mrs. Evelyn Johnson, who celebrated her 94th birthday in January, as she is the great granddaughter of an enslaved African princess and her master. Mrs. Johnson has plans to share her great grandmother’s stories of slavery in two forthcoming books; publications that will be added to an impressive list of writing accomplishments that include the Vassie D. Wright Award-winning novel My Neighbor’s Island and a book of poetry entitled A Nurse’s Notes. In addition to being a writer, Mrs. Johnson is also an R.N. Cum Laude from Freedmen’s Hospital School of Nursing (now known as Howard University College of Nursing); and it is through her vast experience over 75 years of nursing that she became a mentor to Carol Delilly, an Associate Professor and former Director of the A.D.N. Program at Mount Saint Mary’s University in Los Angeles. Carol has been a member of Project Angel Food’s Board of Directors since October 2017 and has used her position to emphasize the importance of research in demonstrating the impact of medically tailored meals on the health of Project Angel Food’s clients.

In the fall of 2019, Carol had the “distinct pleasure” of bringing Mrs. Johnson to Project Angel Food’s 30th Anniversary Angel Awards Gala. During the evening, Mrs. Johnson shared that her late husband was a Project Angel Food client nearly 20 years ago. Project Angel Food is honored to serve the Johnson family and moved by the advocacy and support from Mrs. Johnson and Carol Delilly. Executive Director Richard Ayoub explained, “Project Angel Food has always been a proponent of social equity. Yet, we are eager to improve and learn more, and thanks to Evelyn and Carol, we are doing that.”
