On January 28 and 29, KTLA’s Gayle Anderson reported live from Project Angel Food’s kitchen in Hollywood. Anderson’s coverage focused on the statewide pilot program targeting Medi-Cal (Medicaid) patients who suffer from congestive heart failure (CHF). Project Angel Food is one of 6 non-profit organizations in the California Food is Medicine Coalition participating in the three-year, $6 million study that began in April 2018. Senator Ben Allen, Assemblymember Richard Bloom, Senator Holly Mitchell, and Assemblymember Blanca Rubio were instrumental in passing the legislation necessary to implement the program. Anderson interviews Project Angel Food Executive Director Richard Ayoub, Project Angel Food client and Medi-Cal patient Candice H., and Project Angel Food Board Member and Cardiologist Dr. Tanvir Hussain; revealing that medically tailored nutrition and food interventions administered by organizations like Project Angel Food (and the registered dieticians and professional chefs on their staff) are improving health outcomes and decreasing hospitalizations for Medi-Cal patients with CHF.
