In 1993, during the height of the AIDS crisis, Michael made his first donation to Project Angel Food, the year his partner, Anselmo Feleppa, died of AIDS at the age of 36. Michael had purchased a home in Los Angeles and learned of the important work Project Angel Food was doing; delivering free nutritious meals, comfort, and hope to the men, women, and children ravaged by HIV/AIDS. His gift came at a crucial time as the organization was struggling to meet payroll. Michael was there to help; quietly delivering a humble brown envelope that was discovered on the doorstep of the Sunset Boulevard office by CEO at the time, John Gile. Inside the envelope was a check for $25,000 and a brief handwritten note which read, Just keep doing what you are doing. Love, George.
